Understanding the vat calculator
Value-added tax is the consumption tax used by most of the world outside the United States. Unlike sales tax, it is collected at every stage of production each business charges VAT on sales and reclaims VAT paid on purchases and consumer prices are normally quoted with VAT already included. Standard rates run around 20% in much of Europe, with reduced rates for essentials.
Businesses constantly need both directions of the calculation: adding VAT to a net invoice, and extracting the VAT buried in a gross receipt. Extraction is division, not subtraction the VAT in a 120 gross at 20% is 20, not 24 and this calculator shows both so the wrong one never sneaks into the books.
Results are estimates for education only and are not financial advice.
